Our RCIA Process (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is for all those adults interested in entering the Catholic Church. It is intentionally designed for the pre-baptized. Those who have already been baptized, whether in the Catholic Church or in a Christian denomination, are also invited to enter into the RCIA process to prepare for Confirmation and Holy Communion. An explanation of the process follows.

EXPLANATION OF THE RCIA PROCESS

1. PERIOD OF PRE-CATECHUMENATE AND INQUIRY
The living God and Jesus Christ, whom God has sent for the salvation of all, is faithfully and constantly introduced and proclaimed during this period of the RCIA process. Individual questions about the Catholic Faith are particularly addressed.

2. RITE OF ACCEPTANCE (First Gateway)
Candidates who have completed the period of the pre-catechumenate and wish to continue declare their intention to become members of the Church by entering the catechumenate. This usually takes place on the First Sunday of Advent. It serves as the gateway into the period of the catechumenate. The candidates are now referred to as catechumens.

3. PERIOD OF THE CATECHUMENATE
The catechumens are given suitable pastoral formation and guidance aimed at training them in the Christian life. Questions about the Faith and open discussion are encouraged throughout the RCIA process.

4. RITE OF SENDING AND ELECTION BY THE BISHOP (Second Gateway)
The catechumens are presented by the parish community to the bishop of the diocese who accepts them for preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation. At this point they are elected by the bishop to receive the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. This rite takes place on the First Sunday in Lent. It serves as the gateway into the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. The candidates are now referred to as the elect.

5. PERIOD OF PURIFICATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT
A more intense preparation intended to purify the hearts and minds of the elect.

6. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION AT THE EASTER VIGIL (Third Gateway & Goal of RCIA)
Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion. These sacraments which are also rites serve as the gateway into full communion in the Catholic Church.

7. PERIOD OF MYSTAGOGY
This is a period of deeper explanation of the Holy Mass and the Sacraments.

MISSION STATEMENT

ST. CHARLES BORROMEO RCIA

The Mission of the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is to catechize those who are seeking to learn about the Catholic Faith, discern joining the Catholic Church and prepare for Initiation into the Catholic Faith. We also catechize adult Catholics seeking to complete the Sacraments of Initiation. This is accomplished through faithful sharing of the teaching and training of Jesus Christ. We are here to listen, serve and love.
